WIP Wednesday #7 Amy Butler quilt all finished and some pillow talk

Well it's Wednesday again and this past few days have provided some very generous sewing time.  I have been a busy girl.  I got my Amy Butler quilt all bound and finished.  I also made it a friend- a matching pillow with 4 extra blocks I had left over.  I love making pillows and really love to have matching pillows with the quilts I make- so nice to have a set.  I also spent HOURS quilting teeny tiny pebbles and some pretty feathers on a pillow for my mom's birthday which was on the 25th.  It is a few days late, but hopefully worth the wait.  To make this pillow I dug into my stash of designer samples from a friend who is an interior designer.  There were some lovely silk fabrics in my box and I decided to make it a luxury pillow all done in silk.  I did a simple patchwork design as to not take away from the complex quilting.  My mom is always complaining that the first pillow I made her gets stolen by my dad- so I decided on this one to put her name right on it- MOM in the middle of my feather heart, so there would be no confusion as to whom it belonged.  I really hope she loves it.  I have some glamor shots of my AB quilt and pillow at the park and some MOM pillow shots as well, including one with a quarter to give you all a feel for the scale of the tiny pebbles- they were really fun to quilt but sooo time consuming.  I spent around 7 hours quilting those pebbles- a labor of love for a woman who truly deserves something super special.   I currently have no works in progress and three finishes... Let's see what next week brings!

  1. The quilting is wonderful and I love how brave you added a colored thread: It makes the quilting much more visible which is in this case perfect

    1. Thanks- whenever I quilt for myself I like colorful threads that contrast, kind of a signature style- if I work that hard to quilt things I want to be able to see it! :)

  4. The quilt looks fantastic - gorgeous feathers! I really like the blue thread you chose. Also, the Amy Butler looks great with the grey contrast fabric - very brave choice - I play everything so safe and would have just gone with white - you have inspired me to have a little courage with colour.

    1. Oh good, I love color. In this case it was a bit of a practical decision, this quilt will live in my busy household with 2 very active puppies- and white would not be white in my house for very long, so gray seemed to be a much better choice.

  8. I love the pebble quilting! Your feathers are great too, I am just such a fan of the pebbles. I am making myself a king size quilt and I really want to quilt pebbles in the large solid spaces, but I am nervous. I need to start practicing now to get mine looking as great as yours do! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Wow, pebbles on a king size quilt would be quite the task. I would recommend a much larger scale then you saw on the pillow if it is that big and you want to use it on a bed- that small makes the project a bit stiff- and takes FOREVER. Just go slow and take your time and you will find pebbles aren't as hard as they look. It is all about patience with this particular stitch.
